But yes doctors can legally hold a patient for 72 hours if after a phyc evaluation. The sad part is that all they so is dope them up and release them at 72 hours with little to no follow up care

- Been doing this twenty years myself. I can not say about where you are but in New Jersey it's legal. It's an issue of sound judgment. The patient is deemed to be unable to care for themselves because they are suicidal so the hospital is required by law to protect them until they can be treated. Under this particular circumstance, The patient's rights are limited until they can be essed by a psychiatrist
